Home of a Hero. Rona Mahilum, an eight-year old girl from Sagay City (northeast of Bacolod City), saved all five of her siblings from a midnight blaze that gutted their house in 1996. In the process, she suffered third-degree burns for her selflessness and heroism. She underwent several operations for her severe burns. Heroes come even in small sizes.
Home of a Hero. Manny Pacquiao, the only boxer to hold world titles in seven weight classes, has inspired his townmates from General Santos, his countrymen and the rest of the world with his rags-to-riches story of sporting fare and glory. In the recent Philippine elections, Pacquiao achieved another feat by winning a seat in the House of Representatives.
Place and Patriot. Lea Salonga, multi-awarded international artist, originally played the character of Kim in the hit West End and Broadway musical, Miss Saigon. For her performance, Salonga won the Olivier, Drama Desk, Outer Critics, Theater World and Tony Awards for Best Performance by an Actress in a Musical.
Home of a Hero. Alejandro Melchor Sr., a native of Aklan, was responsible for designing and inventing the pontoon bridges which aided the mobility of allied forces during World War 2. The Engineering building of the University of the Philippines is named in his honor.
Place and Patriot. Manuel L. Quezon was sworn in for his second term as Philippine Commonwealth President on December 30, 1941 in Corregidor. The next month, Quezon was forced to flee Corregidor Island when Japanese forces were closing in on Manila. In preparation for the country's transition from a commonwealth state to an independent republic, Roxas rallied the country behind two legislative landmarks, the Philippine Rehabilitation Act and Philippine Trade Act.
Home of a Hero. Francisco Dagohoy was a Boholano who led the longest revolt against the Spaniards (1744 to 1829). The immediate cause of the revolt was the refusal of a Jesuit priest to give Dagohoy's brother a Christian burial. Spencer Pratt and Rounville Wildman in Singapore between April 22 and 25, 1898 and agreed to be transported from Singapore to the Philippines via Hong Kong to rally Filipinos against Spanish colonial rule. Aguinaldo proclaimed Philippine independence on June 12, 1898.
